When Reality Check<\/em> hit Netflix, I was very curious. America\u2019s Next Top Model <\/em>was kind of appointment television for me when it first aired. I even assisted on one of the show\u2019s fashion shoots after working at a magazine Tyra tried to buy. The memes spawned by people who had watched Reality Check<\/em> right away motivated me to stream it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wasn\u2019t interested in a documentary about how wrong we all were for watching ANTM<\/em> back in the day. We knew what was happening to the contestants was awful, but everything on TV seemed to be different forms of awful. Are you too scared to eat this? Can you survive the elements and petty castaways? How much do you want plastic surgery? Reality television was wild, so why not tune in to watch girls trying to make their modeling dreams come true?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Note: I\u2019m going to keep referring to contestants as \u201cgirls\u201d because they were infantilized and seemed to have no autonomy.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around minute 14 of the second episode of Reality Check<\/em>, they start talking about all the bad ideas that no one wants to take credit for, like the homeless shoot. No one wants a \u201chorrible impacts of smoking\u201d picture on their comp card, but this homeless shoot was so tone deaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality Check<\/em> doesn\u2019t mention discovering Isis King on that shoot. Most of the episode focuses on how insecure contestants felt about their weight. I decided I had to dig up the Cycle 10 Episode 2 (Feb. 27, 2008) to really remember what happened with the homeless theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My research for how to see the episode (it\u2019s on Pluto, not Disney) landed me on stories about Kimberly, a contestant who pulled out of the show and seemed to have a lot of mental health struggles. Reality Check<\/em> never mentions her even though there are warnings for how to find help if you are struggling. So I started rewatching Season 10 from the first episode to see what happened with Kimberly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The season kicks off with showcasing all the bad behavior that made the first nine seasons so dramatic. It could have been a promo for Reality Check<\/em>. Every season starts with casting. When one model says she is still pumping so she\u2019ll be ready to feed her baby back home, there is a shot of the judges drinking glasses of milk. When another model says she always wanted to give a lap dance, they set up a chair for Miss Jay to receive a dance. It feels so obvious now that we\u2019re not really here to watch someone become a super model. We\u2019re here for the ridiculous situations and potential fights. It\u2019s a cast of weirdos. To add stress to the situation, the production casts them in L.A. and then immediately relocates to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an unpaid assistant to Sarah McColgan, a fashion photographer at that time (she does a lot more now), I wasn\u2019t in conversations about how the homeless fashion shoot was coming together let alone how far into production Season 10 was. I just knew the times and locations kept changing. In the end, it\u2019s kind of perfect that they landed on the loading dock\/courtyard of the complex in Union City where McColgan had a studio. The day of the shoot, there was a huge delivery of equipment from Milk, but we ended up with her trusted softbox set up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were shooting in November, so the daytime shoot quickly became night time. It was so cold. My job was to guard McColgan\u2019s hot coffee or the supplied Hasselblad depending on what she wanted in her hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For reality TV, it\u2019s supposedly Day 2 of their time in NYC. They go to meet with Elite management where they are told they need to hail a cab to their first shoot. There\u2019s no mention in this limo ride that the shoot is actually in New Jersey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality Check<\/em> makes fun of how Tyra uses a clip of herself pretending to be forced onto the streets for her talk show as the motivation for this shoot. Tyra\u2019s stunt meant nothing and the ANTM<\/em> episode goes right into introducing a woman from the Reciprocity Foundation, an organization built around breaking the cycle of homelessness by developing talent and skills. Reality Check<\/em>\u2019s theme for the second episode is how ANTM<\/em> kept designing shoots to torture the contestants.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you had a fear of spiders, they would make you pose with a tarantula. The judges told you to lose weight? Now you are pretending to be an elephant. Your mom was shot and is now paralyzed? Today we\u2019re photographing gruesome crime scenes, and you have been shot in the head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the Reciprocity Foundation shoot, the organization brought young women facing homelessness daily to model, but two of the contestants had previously been unhoused. The shoot doesn\u2019t seem to unleash any trauma for them as much as propel them to be less combative with each other. Meanwhile, I wonder if the contrast of the theme is what propels Kimberly to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Isis King, one of the non-models, introduces herself as a fashion designer. The unhoused models will wear high fashion while the contestants will wear street clothes and pretend to be homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsis is wearing me out.\u201d The editing on the show only had Mr. Jay say that once, but I felt like he said it a million times that day. (I had a huge crush, so I was hanging on his every word.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fatima, who lived in a shelter for part of her upbringing, starts to get emotional. Mr. Jay says those are going to be some great pictures. At panel, Tyra tells her she only had one good photo. But at least her looking up at the light seemed like she was begging God for answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Reality Check<\/em>, Mr. Jay talked through how they sometimes didn\u2019t pick the best picture to use at panel. I\u2019ll have to come back in a different post to get into how the ANTM<\/em> fashion shoot just wasn\u2019t a real photo shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they call Kimberly forward to look at her picture, she says she doesn\u2019t think fashion is for her. The girls walked in a Badgley-Mischka runway show, and Kimberly seemed kind of repulsed by $100 shorts and a $700 purse. (Those prices make me laugh. I took a $100 gift to Bloomingdale\u2019s and couldn\u2019t think about buying anything there.) Then she has to figure out how to pose like she\u2019s destitute while the other models are better than her based on their clothes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the shoot, Mr. Jay calls her out for the same blank stare in every frame. She doesn\u2019t seem interested in feedback. Watching her drop out of the show is not that sad, but, because it is only the second episode of the season, the memory of other girls crying so hard when they aren\u2019t cast is pretty fresh. Supposedly she showed up years later on Tyra\u2019s talk show to explore more of why she departed so abruptly. Her history with mental illness was so much bigger than Reality Check<\/em> warning viewers to seek help for eating disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I took so long to write this reaction to the second episode of Reality Check<\/em> because my slice of the terrible ideas for fashion shoots was so small. I had to go back and rewatch the real episode to be sure Mr. Jay reacting to Isis was everything I remembered leading up to her becoming a contestant on Season 11. No, I\u2019m not about to rewatch anymore of ANTM<\/em>, though. I\u2019ve seen enough awful behavior.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
