Parking Boot

NYC parking boot on sidewalk instead of on a car

The first time I noticed the red and green boot, I thought it was so festive. It was December and I used to spend a lot of time driving my kids to and from school in slow traffic, so I had seen a lot of orange boots.

On this day, my first goal was to get to Baskin Robbins with my gift card, but I decided I should snap a picture because I think they’re fascinating. Like someone on Reddit commented, “Like, Santa comes and immobilizes your car because you’ve been a naughty driver.”

In case you’ve never seen a parking boot, it’s a sign the vehicle has wracked up enough debt through parking tickets and camera violations. The green boots are from City Sheriffs trying to prevent a car from moving in exchange for fines and fees.

There is a key pad on the boot because as soon as you go to NYC Boot Pay you receive a code to unlock the boot. You’re supposed to return the boot within 24 hours to avoid $25/day fines for late fees. It’s not like the Sheriffs won’t know which car the boot was attached to.
