I don’t usually convert my pictures, but this one felt like the action might benefit from being reduced to black & white.
Bright blue versus dark blue was begging me play with the levels. Photoshop is my jam, so I’m not simply taking down the saturation to 0%. While I was able to differentiate the blues more, the photograph doesn’t have the right depth. The grass is so dark.
The shadows left on some of these girls struck me as unflattering, so I recropped to keep the focus on the ball.
In the end, I think the original color version maintains the drama better than my black and white. Even if I keep working the contrast, it won’t improve the composition. The bright colors might have been most of the drama.
